Recently we have discovered the wonders of DIY White Clay. It is hard to believe that you can make your own clay simply by using two everyday household items - glue and cornflour. That is it! With Valentine's Day fast approaching I had the perfect excuse to use this simple recipe to make DIY Clay Heart Pendants.
I poured two half cups of cornflour into our wonderful heart shaped plastic bowl. Slowly I added the entire 118ml bottle of glue into the bowl stirring continuously. At first I didn't think the mixture would ever change but eventually I had a substance similar in texture to ready-roll icing. I found that the more I kneaded the clay the better it became so be prepared to knead it for a long time.
I put the white clay on top of some baking paper and rolled it flat. The baking paper prevents the clay from sticking and made it easier to lift off the completed pendant. I took a heart cookie cutter and used it to create a heart in the white clay. I removed the clay heart and placed it onto a heart shaped plate that was also lined with baking paper. Next I found a smaller heart cookie cutter and placed in inside the larger heart. Carefully I removed the small heart and placed it on the plate.
I repeated the same procedure using three different sized heart cookie cutters so I had a total of six hearts. Finally I took a wooden skewer and used it to create a small hole in the top of each heart. I left the DIY Clay Hearts to dry overnight.
The next day the clay hearts were solid enough to paint. I used acrylic paints to cover each heart, ensuring that each heart duo was a different colour from each other. I used a small paint brush to ensure that the paint covered the inside of the holes. If the paint covered the hole completely I turned the heart over and blew through the hole. This removed the paint and gave a clear hole. Each heart required two coats of acrylic paint.
Once the paint had dried I set about creating the heart pendants. I used a plastic needle threaded with red and white Bakers Twine. I pushed the needle into the back of the larger heart and then through the smaller heart. Finally I pushed the needle back through the larger heart and tied a knot. I left enough twine to enable the pendant to be placed around someone’s neck.
I repeated the procedure until I had three completed DIY Clay Heart Pendants. They would make wonderful Valentine's Day gifts from little ones.
