Borax Crystal Snowflakes
How to Make Borax Crystals

Make gorgeous crystal snowflakes by using just a few ingredients! This always blows my sons mind when we make these borax crystals. You can really make any shape with a pipe cleaner! Make sure to also try our crystal hearts for Valentines too!

You will need a mason jar, a straw, a string, borax, water, food coloring, and a pipe cleaner to make these crystal snowflakes! You can find the borax in the laundry section at the store. But do note it is toxic for humans and pets to eat it so please supervise when doing this activity.
I recommend using the “fuzzy” pipe cleaners over the metallic sparkly ones because the crystals attach to it better. You can make these snowflakes any color you want! I think pinks and purples would be super pretty too. When you pull the crystal out of the jar just wipe off all the excess liquid and be careful. They are quite fragile and can break if you drop them.

Let’s Get This Snowflake Party Started! First things first, boil some water! While that’s heating up, get crafty and cut a pipe cleaner into thirds. Twist two pieces together, then add the third to create a snowflake shape that’s totally unique. Trim those ends to make sure your snowflake fits snugly in the jar without touching the sides.
Time to Add Some Stringy Magic! Tie a string around your snowflake, then attach it to a straw or pencil. Make sure it’s short and sweet, so it doesn’t touch the bottom of the mason jar. Now, pour that boiling water into the jar, add 6 tablespoons of borax, and stir until it’s all combined. The Waiting Game Begins!
Gently lower your pipe cleaner snowflake into the jar, and let it chill for 24 hours. When you pull it out, it might be stuck to the side, but don’t worry! Just wiggle it gently, wipe off the excess liquid, and… voilà ! Your very own borax snowflake is ready to shine!
