I am all about making cheap homemade Christmas gifts as well as making memories/keepsakes. This fingerprint snowman salt dough ornament is a great idea to make with your kiddos! Whether they are 1 years old or a teenager, this is a fun activity for the family! One batch of this dough makes about 4 ornaments.

Salt Dough Ornament Ingredients:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup water
  • Parchment paper or aluminium foil
  • Straw/pen for punching a hole

Mix up all the ingredients and knead it so it gets firm. Roll the dough out and cut it in a circle using the brim of a glass. Have the kids press their finger in the dough in three spots making a snowman shape. Use a straw or pen cap to make a hole at the top.

Bake the ornament on tin foil or parchment paper at 200 degrees for 2-3 hours. Once it's cool, paint around the fingerprints with blue paint and fill in the imprints with white acrylic paint. Add details with paint and finish off the ornament with a pretty ribbon.

We also made a fingerprint gingerbread man ornament!

its (salty) dough can be saved for a long time in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. I always do it. each time before use add in a little flour.
    Sorry for my english))

Nope mine did not - maybe it's your type of flour?

Did yours puff up? I had that issue with a similar recipe.

I honestly have no idea - you'd have to do a trial run I bet sorry!

I am a teacher and I love inexpensive, great keepsakes like these! Do you think it's possible to make the dough ahead of time, store it in an airtight container, and then have some lapse time with the pressing to the baking (after school --> home to bake)? Thank you!
